What kind of sign am I allowed to have?

Most municipalities have established regulations relating to allowable signs. Typical restrictions include:

• Maximum size, height and quantity
• Types of signs (e.g. wall signs, ground mounted signs, temporary signs, directories, etc.)
• Minimum setback on property
• Animation (i.e. sequential lights, flashing, rotating, etc.)

If you would prefer to investigate the rules yourself, your local Department of Land Use, Zoning or Licensing and Inspection can furnish you with parameters. Be sure to have your address and land Tax Parcel number with you. A site plan of your property showing the proposed location of your sign is a good idea as well.
